New year, two new projects

With the start of 2025, UNIVR attends launch meetings of two new EU-funded projects, PIPELINE and PROACT EU-Response.

PIPELINE

Full project title: Pregnancy and Infant PrEparedness pLatform IN Europe

The overall objective of PIPELINE is to develop a dedicated pregnancy-infant preparedness platform for adaptive trials, to improve pandemic preparedness for these underserved populations.

The specific objectives of PIPELINE are to:

  • establish a multi-country adaptive trials platform that that can support novel diagnostics, vaccines and therapeutics for infections in pregnancy and infancy, able to pivot rapidly to emerging health threats;

  • create and sustain a responsive and “ever-warm” clinical trial network of sites with expertise in recruiting pregnant women and infants and adaptive trial designs;

  • undertake an adaptive platform trial on respiratory syncytial virus immunisation in pregnant women and infants, to test the platform’s capabilities and address a public health priority for the EU;

  • evaluate novel sampling techniques and immunity approaches with relevance for preparedness; and

  • embed all activities within sustained dissemination, exploitation and communication with key stakeholders to translate results.

The ID-CARE team here at UNIVR are involved in Work Package (WP) 1 Preparedness platform implementation, WP2 Preparedness platform sustainability and WP9 Dissemination, Exploitation and Communication.

The PIPELINE Soft-Launch Meeting was held yesterday, on January 30th, online, with the official Kick-Off Meeting scheduled for April 2nd and 3rd in Paris. The meeting provided an excellent opportunity to get a clear overview of the project and the different work packages. It also provided insight into the various studies and sub-studies included into the project.

PROACT EU-Response

Full project title: A European Proactive Adaptive Clinical Trials Network within EU-Response

PROACT EU-Response’s overarching objective is to prepare Europe for future pandemics by strengthening upon existing networks of experts and civil society focused on clinical therapeutic platform trials within hospital inpatient settings across Europe. In case of an outbreak, this network will provide capacity to pivot rapidly to implement large, multi-country platform trials studying therapeutics and diagnostic-tool performance.

Underpinned by strong community involvement and further strengthened by the inclusion of social and implementation scientists, PROACT EU-Response centres on six objectives:

  • expand a solid network of clinical centres across Europe that will implement a clinical trial assessing a syndromic approach for respiratory viral infections;

  • strengthen a laboratory network to identify pathogens and biomarkers of disease monitoring for routine surveillance;

  • support a network of methodologists and trialists who will ensure the trials’ logistical and methodological aspects;

  • initiate a network of professionals to work on preparedness tools to ensure a smooth pivot from inter-pandemic to the pandemic period in case of an outbreak;

  • build a network of social science researchers who will provide nuanced understanding of the social contexts;

  • and establish a community group to work on activities that will empower patients and citizens in Europe regarding their own health and educate them about science and health issues.

By bringing together scientists, social science researchers, and civil society members, PROACT EU-Response will benefit the entire European population and beyond through decreased mortality and morbidity associated with emerging diseases, lower societal economic costs of morbidity, strengthened research and innovation expertise, human capacities, and know-how for combatting communicable diseases.

The ID-CARE Team at UNIVR, under the direction of Evelina Tacconelli, will be involved in the development of the Clinical Trial Network and, in particular, the Target Trial Emulations for pandemic preparedness. Prof. Del Piccolo, Professor in Clinical Psychology of UNIVR, is also involved in the project in the social and implementation science work packages.

The Kick-Off meeting for PROACT EU-Response was also held this week, on the 29th and 30th of January in Paris. From UNIVR, Prof. Evelina Tacconelli, Prof. Lidia Del Piccolo, Dr. Elena Carrara, Dr. Fulvia Mazzaferri, and Dr. Valeria Donisi attended the meeting. The two-day agenda was packed full of interesting discussions, giving a clear sense of direction for the project and overview of the multiple work streams organised within PROACT EU-Response. The second day ended with a useful “Networking with Networks” session, where representatives from PIPELINE, PANTHER, STRIVE, and our own Director of ID-CARE and Chief Scientific Officer of ECRAID, Evelina Tacconelli, representing ECRAID, were in attendance.
